Over 170 Democratic lawmakers are urging Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and White House budget director Russell Vought to remove members of the Department of Government Efficiency, led by Elon Musk, from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) due to concerns about dismantling the agency. The lawmakers argue that the effort to take control of the CFPB’s operations is a clear example of President Trump rewarding his billionaire supporters at the expense of ordinary Americans. Reports have surfaced that DOGE employees have entered the CFPB headquarters and requested access to sensitive information. The lawmakers, including Sen. Elizabeth Warren, are calling for the removal of Musk’s operatives from the CFPB and the restoration of its systems and operations to continue protecting American consumers. Vought, who is now acting head of the CFPB, has issued directives to halt certain activities within the agency which has led to a lawsuit from a union. The Democrats vow to fight against efforts to dismantle the CFPB and preserve its role in regulating financial institutions and protecting consumers.
