NASA has estimated that asteroid 2024 YR4 measures between 130 and 300 feet across and would impact Earth at a high velocity of roughly 38,000 mph if it were to hit. However, the asteroid is not a threat to the entire planet or humanity, as it would likely only cause local damage. The asteroid was first detected on December 27, 2024, by a station in Chile and has been studied using ground-based telescopes since then. It will remain visible to ground-based observatories through April before becoming too faint to see until June 2028. In March, NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope will focus on the asteroid to better assess its size.
