The Army Corps of Engineers is reducing the flow of water over Barkley Dam as runoff from heavy rains moves downstream. Currently, the dam is discharging 80,000 cubic feet per second on Friday and 78,900 on Saturday. Only 46,000 cfs are coming in from upstream on the Cumberland River. Further reductions are expected on Sunday to 70,000 cfs. The Corps states that 87% of Lake Barkley’s capacity to retain flood waters is still available, but not likely to be needed as water levels are decreasing. At Kentucky Dam, outflow has been steady at over 230,000 cubic feet per second, with forecasts to slow to 215,000 by Sunday and 189,000 by Tuesday. Both dams are not approaching their record for discharges seen in previous years. The Cumberland River at Clarksville has receded below action stage and is expected to continue falling. The Army Corps of Engineers is monitoring the situation closely.
