Great Crossing secures 2nd consecutive Sweet 16 appearance thanks to Malachi Moreno’s triple-double performance

Great Crossing Warhawks win 11th Region championship, advance to Sweet 16 state tournament

In a thrilling game against Frederick Douglass, the Great Crossing Warhawks secured their second consecutive 11th Region championship, punching their ticket to the Sweet 16 state tournament. Led by Kentucky commit Malachi Moreno, who recorded a triple-double with 21 points, 12 rebounds, and 10 blocks, the Warhawks were able to narrowly defeat the Broncos with a final score of 59-57.

Despite a late-game surge by Frederick Douglass, Great Crossing maintained the lead for most of the game, shooting over 50% from the field and stifling the Broncos’ offense. Moreno, named MVP of the 11th Region, was instrumental in Great Crossing’s success, along with Morehead State commit Vince Dawson, who contributed 17 points and seven rebounds.

This victory marks a repeat of last year’s triumph for the Warhawks, who are now set to compete in the Sweet 16 tournament at Rupp Arena later this month. With memories of their previous run fresh in their minds, the team is determined to make a strong showing and potentially secure a championship title.

Head coach Steve Page expressed optimism for his team’s chances, joking about avoiding last-minute stress in future games. With high expectations for a showdown with top-ranked St. Xavier, Great Crossing is gearing up for an exciting and challenging competition in the upcoming tournament.
