Louisville, KY – Advocates, including VOCAL-KY and over 70 national and state organizations, have voiced concerns about potential cuts to Medicaid due to a budget resolution passed by the House. The American Rescue Plan Act, signed into law in March 2021, increased funding for Medicaid, expanding services for millions of low-income and disabled Americans. VOCAL-KY staff member, Brittany Morris, shared her personal story of how access to Medicaid helped her during a challenging time, emphasizing the life-saving importance of the program.
The letter sent to Congress demands a rejection of the budget resolution, which calls for trillions of dollars in tax and spending cuts, potentially impacting Medicaid. Despite claims from Republicans that there won’t be cuts to the program, an analysis by the Congressional Budget Office suggests otherwise. The spending bill would require significant cuts to Medicaid, which accounts for 93% of the House Energy and Commerce Committee’s spending. Advocates fear that such cuts could have devastating consequences, leading to people being denied life-saving medical treatment due to lack of health insurance. The letter urges Congress to protect Medicaid and prioritize the health and well-being of vulnerable populations.
