New York Police Commissioner Edward Caban has resigned amid a federal investigation into nightclub enforcement within the department. Caban, the city’s first Latino police commissioner, stated that recent developments have created a distraction and he wants to focus on the important work of the NYPD. Mayor Eric Adams appointed Thomas Donlon as the interim police commissioner. Caban’s phone was seized in a separate probe, along with the homes of other high-ranking officials. The investigation is looking into potential corruption involving Caban’s twin brother, who owns a nightclub security business. Caban’s lawyers stated that he is not a target of the investigation. Additionally, federal investigators have been searching the homes of city officials and advisors close to Adams in a separate investigation related to potential illegal campaign contributions from foreign sources. Adams has not been officially accused of wrongdoing and has accepted Caban’s resignation as the best decision at this time. The mayor has repeatedly deflected questions about the investigation and stated that he takes the inquiries seriously. The U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York did not immediately comment on the matter. Adams wishes Caban well and respects his decision to resign from his position.
