First Kentucky businesses awarded medical marijuana licenses

The first Kentucky businesses were chosen on Monday to receive medical cannabis licenses in the Commonwealth. Governor Andy Beshear attended the “License Lottery” event in Louisville, which marked the beginning of the process to produce and sell medical marijuana to those in need. The selected businesses include medical cannabis cultivators and processors, with the aim of providing relief to patients suffering from serious conditions such as cancer or PTSD. The Kentucky Office of Medical Cannabis and the Kentucky Lottery Corporation collaborated to assign the first 26 licenses using random number generators, ensuring fairness and transparency in the selection process. Of the 4,998 total submissions, 774 were approved for cultivators and processors, with four of the businesses located in the WLKY viewing area. Governor Beshear emphasized the responsible and regulated nature of the program, which is expected to officially roll out in January with the goal of starting sales on Jan. 1. However, potential delays in dispensary inspections may pose challenges to meeting this target date. The license lottery for medical marijuana dispensaries will be announced in the near future, further expanding the medical cannabis industry in Kentucky.
